How exactly do you know if your drain is blocked?

There are some tell-tale signs that indicate a blocked drain:

• gurgling sounds and a foul smell coming from the drain gate or toilet;
• rising and falling water levels in the toilet beyond that which is normal;
• overflowing drain after the washing machine has been used.
